Ten Tips for Starting a Project

  1. There should be a signed-off set of business requirements for the project and a set of approved project requirements/objectives
  2. There should be a set of repeatable/maintainable procedures and guidelines that support project management efforts
  3. Senior management must sign off on the project and fully supports the team (it is helpful when the senior management team is knowledgable of the development process)
  4. Establish effective/measurable milestones for monitoring project performance
  5. Create a project plan that is maintained and updated whenever necessary (management must sign-off on all updates)
  6. The project scope must be managed very closely (don't allow unmanaged project growth/creep)!
  7. Decide, before you begin, who the escalation points are for problems which cannot be quickly resolved
  8. Understand project risks and take appropriate action when necessary
  9. Your development team should motivated and focused
  10. Project successes should be broadcast throughout the company (procedures/processes that work should be shared)
